Adult Sailing

Adult Sailing

GBSA is proud to offer adult sailing classes to the public. All levels of experience are welcome. Our adult sailing classes are taught on our J22's, one of the most popular keel boats ever built. The J22 is safe, stable, fast and fun – a great platform to learn how to sail.

The adult sailing program is a combination of classroom and on-the-water instruction with the majority of your time being spent on the water.  Each class will consist of a maximim of 3 students and 1 instructor.

We highly encourage you to sign up as a friend group!

Please read all policies outlined in the "Additional Info" sections

If there is only 1 student registered for the class, an additional $100 fee will be assessed to cover the cost of running a private lesson. Participants will be notified 1 week before the program starts if this is the case and will have the option of withdrawing from the course with a full refund.

Classes will meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5:00PM – 8:00PM.  If all participants would prefer a 530 start time, that may be arranged as long as it also works for our coaching staff.

Topics will included:

  • Nomenclature
  • Rigging / De-rigging
  • Docking / Mooring
  • Tacking / Gybing
  • Points of Sail
  • Rules of the road / USCG Navigation Rules
  • Person Overboard

  • Cancellation Policy - Bad Weather

If inclement weather prevents the lesson from being held, you will receive an email and text from the Program Director by 3pm that day. If the lesson is cancelled for this reason, a makeup will be held at the end of the season. Make-up dates for 2021 include Tuesday Sept. 14th and Thursday Sept. 16th. If you cannot attend either of the makeup days, no refund will be given for the missed lesson.

  • Cancellation - What if you can't make the lesson?

If you cannot attend a lesson for whatever reason, you must email the director by 3pm that day. If you are the only person in the class, and you let the director know by 3pm you will not be able to make the lesson, you will be able to makeup the lesson on the designated lesson days. If there are other students in your class, the Program Director will try to place you for a lesson in another block. This, however, is not guarunteed. We do not prorate for any missed lessons.

  • Sole Participant Policy

If you are the only participant signed up for a block of lessons, you will be notified 2 weeks prior to the start of the lesson. At this time, you will be able to opt out of the lesson for a full refund OR you may keep the lessons as scheduled, but agree to pay an additional fee of $100 to cover the cost of running the private lesson. This fee is to be paid prior to the first lesson or we will accept a check/cash at the time of the first lesson.
